10 Ways To Have a Better Conversation

10 Ways To Have a Better Conversation By Celeste Headlee

For our assignment this week, we watched "10 Ways To Have a Better Conversation" by Celeste Headlee. She brought up many interesting points, and the gave 10 suggestions on how to have a better conversation and show someone you actually care, and are listening. Some things I found interesting from the video were the statistics at the beginning, and then some of her suggestions. In the beginning, she makes a good point that is still relevant to this day, that really any conversation could turn into an argument. Nowadays, everyone has such severely different opinions and beliefs, some of which make them dislike other people, and our own politicians hate each other and can't talk to each other. She mentions that a study was done on 10,000 Americans, and we learned that we are more 'polarized" and against each other than ever, and it's because we aren't listening to each other. One of my favorite tips of hers was #6, which was to not equate your experience with theirs. Headlee uses the example of if they lost a family member, don't talk about the time you lost a family member, and if they are having a rough time at work, don't talk about how you hate your job because it is not the same. This video really opened my eyes to the things the people around me, as well as myself, do or don't do in conversations and how it affects the outcome.
